Intensive English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Higher

 

Aim of the Course:
At this level the emphasis is on refining existing language skills and continuing to develop your  understanding across a range of media as well as your use of idiomatic, colloquial and job/subject-specific language.  Applicants at this stage are typically looking at higher study opportunities in colleges or universities, or they wish to move into better jobs commensurate with existing qualifications or experience.  The Intensive ESOL Higher course combines language skills study with study of other subjects from the wider College programme to enable you to practise a wide range of language and skills in an area of interest to you.

Course Content:
Core language units include: SQA ESOL:  Everyday Communication (Higher), SQA ESOL:  Study-related Contexts (Higher), SQA ESOL:  Work-related contexts (Higher), Access to Media in ESOL, Exam Practice for IELTS, Advanced Communication Skills.

Candidates will study two other subjects from the wider College programme each term. To gain the full SQA ESOL Higher qualification, candidates will have to sit an external examination as part of the course.  This exam takes place in May/June 2011.

The SQA ESOL Higher is recognised by Scottish universities as part of their entry requirements.

Duration:
The full-time ESOL courses take place five days a week, either morning or afternoon.   Courses run from August 2010 until June 2011.

Educational Progression:
You can progress on to College HNC courses or University courses depending on previous experience and qualifications. 

Career Progression:
Successful completion of this course will increase your work and study options in a wide range of subject areas.

Qualifications Required:
Applicants would be expected to have successfully completed an Intermediate 2 qualification or the equivalent.  All applicants will be invited for an interview and you will be assessed so that we can advise you on the most suitable level for your needs.
