A Taste of Spain
As part of the Leonardo Mobility ‘Lifelong Learning Programme’, a group of students from Reid Kerr College recently took part in a European work placement project, which funded 25 Hospitality students to work in Valencia, Spain. The students worked for two weeks in a variety of bistros, restaurants and up-market hotels in the city.
Head of Head of Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Carol Gaffney said, “The College’s Centre for Leisure Industries was successful in applying for a Mobility Award funded through the European Leonardo programme. Funding for this trip was granted for learners in Initial Vocational Education and Training and included young learners straight from school and mature adults studying for the first time.
The students took part in cultural preparation which included Spanish lessons ahead of their trip to Valencia and while they were there, the students visited tourist attractions and experienced a taste of Spain enjoying local food and culture. As part of the project, students also gained new certificates to add to their CV’s as well as a ‘Europass Certificate, the common document of recognition throughout European countries which acknowledges participation in projects such as these.”
Many of the students were offered employment should they wish to return to work in Spain after their studies and the students all agreed that it had been a superb, once in a lifetime experience and were grateful to the Leonardo programme for the wonderful opportunity.
